A notebook and pen arranged for writing, illustrating memories and poetry

A Notebook Full of Words and Memories

What’s one thing you own that holds deep sentimental value?

When I think about the things we treasure, I often think of a notebook filled with words. It may look ordinary to someone else. Yet for a writer, even a few pages can hold the beginnings of a poem, a passing thought, or a question that stays with us.

I am drawn to the idea of a notebook because writing often begins quietly. Sometimes a thought comes during an everyday conversation. Sometimes it grows from a memory, a place, or a feeling I cannot explain immediately. Not every sentence becomes a finished poem, but each one can teach me something.

What Words Can Carry

As a Vietnamese poet engaging with people across cultures, I value the way language carries more than information. Words can hold a sense of home. They can help us remember the voices of others and make space for experiences different from our own.

A notebook reminds me that we do not have to understand everything at once. We can return to an unfinished thought after days or years and discover that it means something new. Our experiences change, and so does the way we read our own words.

Of course, the sentimental value of an object does not come from its price or appearance. It comes from the life connected to it. A photograph, a letter, a book, or a small gift may seem simple, but it can remind someone of a person or moment that matters deeply.

If I were to choose an object that represents this feeling, I would choose a poetry notebook: a quiet place where memories and new ideas can meet. What matters most to me is not the object itself, but the stories we are able to preserve through it.

A Question for Readers

Is there an everyday object that holds a special memory for you? What makes it meaningful?
