The Philosophy I Choose to Live By
A question for reflection: If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?
My answer is simple: Live with kindness, remain humble, respect our differences, and never stop learning from life.
It sounds simple, but I find that the simplest values are often the ones we need to practise every day.
Life has introduced me to people with different languages, traditions, beliefs, and ways of seeing the world. Each encounter reminds me that my own experience is only one small part of a much larger story. I do not need to agree with everyone to listen to them, and I do not need to know everything to learn something.
What kindness means to me
Kindness is not always a grand gesture. Sometimes it is taking time to listen when someone needs to be heard. Sometimes it is choosing gentle words, offering encouragement, or showing patience when we do not fully understand another person’s circumstances.
I believe humility belongs beside kindness. There is always something new to discover, whether from a child, an elder, a stranger, or someone whose life has been very different from mine.
Learning across cultures
Different cultures have their own ways of expressing care, respect, family, and belonging. Rather than seeing these differences as barriers, I hope we can approach them with curiosity. A conversation can change an assumption. A shared story can help us understand why something matters deeply to another person.
I am still learning. I make mistakes, rethink old ideas, and sometimes find that a quiet moment teaches me more than a long explanation.
A philosophy to practise, not just describe
For me, a meaningful life is not measured only by achievements or recognition. It is also found in the way we treat people when no one is watching, the care we give to our relationships, and our willingness to grow.
My life philosophy is not a claim that I have everything figured out. It is a reminder of the person I hope to keep becoming.
What about you? If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?
Vo Thi Nhu Mai
It seems often the simplest Philosophy is also the most profound.
Thank you for your thoughtful words. I believe simplicity often carries a wisdom we overlook. As life unfolds, I find myself appreciating the little things more: kindness, understanding, patience, and the quiet moments we sometimes take for granted.
Perhaps the deepest lessons are not always the hardest to understand, but the ones we learn to live by.
Has life ever taught you something simple that changed the way you see things?
